Visionaries of Modernism
Willi Baumeister – Adolf Hölzel – Ida Kerkovius – Oskar Schlemmer

Kleiner Schlossplatz 11 | 70173 Stuttgart

The history of modernism is not merely the history of individual geniuses, but also the history of artistic networks, personal encounters, and spiritual affinities—far removed from any mystically detached mindset or egomaniacal delusions: The protagonists of Classical Modernism sought nothing less than a reorientation of art and, indeed, of humanity in the world. This is clearly evident in the relationship between Adolf Hölzel, Willi Baumeister, Oskar Schlemmer, and Ida Kerkovius.

They belonged to different eras—Hölzel, a contemporary of Van Gogh and Hodler, was a generation older. Yet they were united by shared experiences, mutual respect, and the search for new forms of artistic expression, without explicitly founding a school. Each of them developed a distinctive artistic style. Their collective work reflects the major currents of European modernism, ranging from Symbolism and abstraction to Bauhaus ideas and a constructive approach to imagery.
