CREATOR FROM THE UNKNOWN 1889–1955
Brigitte Pedde: Willi Baumeister – Creator from the Unknown. 1889–1955
Willi Baumeister (1889–1955) is one of Modernism’s significant artists. A central theme in his work was the search for universally valid points of reference and sources of artistic creation: Creativity as a never-ending process of discovery.
As a painter and art professor, Willi Baumeister campaigned for open artistic exchange. With this current publication, the Willi Baumeister Fondation is reaching out in a new direction: for the first time ever, an introduction to the work of Baumeister is freely available on the internet as a high-quality open-access art book.

Willi Baumeister wrote ‘Das Unbekannte in der Kunst’ (The Unknown in Art) in 1943/44, during the Second World War. He was considered a ‘degenerate’ artist and worked in secret. As it became increasingly difficult to pursue his artistic career, he began to write about art. The book is published in 1947 and is received with enthusiasm. Baumeister’s theoretical treatise on modern, abstract art is particularly well received in the post-war period.
‘Das Unbekannte in der Kunst’ was published three times, in 1947, 1960 (revised) and 1988 (based on the 1960 edition, supplemented by an appendix listing the differences between the first and second editions), as well as in an English translation in 2013 under the title ‘The Unknown In Art’.
The download version provided here corresponds to the third edition.
